It's the business of lighting the candles and getting out the camping stove and feeling slightly smug and then it all comes back on again! And we're trying not to think about the rapidly filling bucket in the loft under the round hole in the wood exposed by the demise of our ridging...

If you're Hermione Gingold, I'll be Maurice Chevalier!
Incidentally... I read somewhere recently that the lobes responsible for memory re-invent the memory every time we access it. If only I could remember where & when (cue for another song).

Alison, I know this is an old post but it's taken me a while to catch up with all your blogging! I love this as it rings so many bells with me. Living with a clean and tidy freak ( I use the word freak without any hesitation) in the form of one Alistair Alexander, who can't grasp that at the tender age of 39 I ain't going to change fundamentally no matter how much he nags me :-)

Anyway thanks for making me feel I'm not the only one...and I'm absolutely delighted that someone as wise and intelligent as your good self falls into the same category!

On the subject of utilities, may I share this with you?

On another exciting day in the office..... The power in the office went off while I was in the Sacristy. I heard the beeping of the office alarm. I phoned Scottish Power, who couldn't find the office address in their records, but promised a visit from an engineer some day; I played with the trip switches. Nothing.

I went to post the various notices about the church - 5 minutes or thereabouts. (As an aside - the organ scholar had come in to tell me that the lock of the connecting door at the oratory was bu... broken. However, I was busy....) When I returned to the back door, it was clear that the power had been restored: the light outside the office door was on, and the alarm was in full cry. Rushing to get in & stop it, I was temporarily halted by the sight of several cakes of Weetabix scattered in front of the door - no milk, no sugar, just Weetabix. Perhaps an annoyed neighbour awakened from sleep at 3.15 pm? Who knows? I silenced the alarm, rescued the Elgar project I had been working on in Sibelius and swept away the cereal. I left shortly afterwards. I should have preferred Sultana Bran.
